Position Summary
The Career Counselor supports the academic, personal, and future-planning development of Secondary students (Grades 6–9) through a proactive and developmental career guidance program. The Counselor helps students explore their strengths, interests, and aspirations while equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed educational and career decisions. Through counseling, workshops, and collaboration with teachers, families, and community the Career Counselor contributes to a school culture that empowers every student to envision and pursue a purposeful future aligned with the KIS Astana mission and IB philosophy.

Reports to: Relevant Principal (Secondary) and ultimately to the Head of School

Key Responsibilities:

1. Student Guidance and Support

• Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students in understanding themselves, setting goals, and exploring future academic and career pathways.
• Help students connect their personal strengths, interests, and values to future studies and career possibilities.
• Introduce students to foundational concepts of career exploration and personal development appropriate for middle and early high school levels.
• Guide students through the early stages of academic planning, including subject selection and understanding how choices relate to future options.

2. Career and Academic Readiness Programs

• Design and deliver age-appropriate lessons and workshops on career awareness, goal-setting, study skills, personal interests, and life skills.
• Collaborate with teachers to integrate career education themes into advisory sessions, homerooms, or subject areas.
• Organize and facilitate school-wide or grade-level events such as Career Days, Guest Speaker Series, or community engagement activities highlighting real-world connections to learning.
• Build and maintain resources (digital and print) to support student exploration of educational and career pathways in local and global contexts.

3. Collaboration and Consultation

• Work collaboratively with the Student Support Team, teachers, and advisors to ensure a coordinated approach to student development and well-being.
• Provide guidance to faculty on incorporating future-ready skills and self-reflection opportunities into classroom learning.
• Engage with parents through information sessions, consultations, and communication to strengthen home–school partnerships in supporting students’ educational and career growth.
• Liaise with external partners, organizations, and institutions to enhance career exploration opportunities and expand community connections.

4. Documentation and Program Development

• Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions, plans, and developmental progress.
• Support the ongoing review and development of the school’s career education program as the secondary division expands.
• Track and evaluate program effectiveness, using data to inform future planning and continuous improvement.
• Prepare for the gradual implementation of college and career counseling services as the school grows to include upper secondary grades.

5. School Culture and Professional Contribution

• Promote a positive, inclusive, and forward-looking school culture that values curiosity, exploration, and growth.
• Support school initiatives that develop students’ self-awareness, leadership, and global citizenship.
• Participate actively in staff meetings, professional learning, and the continuous improvement of Student Support Services.
• Represent the school professionally in the wider educational community and model ethical, student-centered counseling practice.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Education, or a related field (Master’s preferred). Minimum 3 years of experience working with adolescents in a school or youth development context.
• Professional certification or equivalent experience in school counseling, career education, or student guidance.
• Knowledge of adolescent development, career exploration frameworks, and best practices in academic and career counseling.
• Understanding of international school contexts and IB MYP/DP philosophy (preferred).
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
