About Syntato Syntato is a biotechnology company that designs and builds new plant genomes to address agricultural and environmental challenges. We operate at the intersection of biology, technology, and design — exploring how plants can be reimagined through synthetic genomics. We are funded by the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) and embedded within Imperial College's Hammersmith Campus. We believe that building tools and technologies for plant biology is among the most impactful ways to correct our unsustainable trajectory. The Role We’re looking for a Chief of Staff to work directly with our founder and take ownership of day-to-day operations at Syntato. This is a foundational role for someone who thrives on creating order, driving momentum, and translating vision into structure. As our first operations hire, you’ll help build the internal scaffolding of the company — from systems and processes to special projects and strategic coordination. If you’re curious, driven, and comfortable in ambiguity, this could be the perfect role for you. What You’ll Do Own and manage operational workflows across the company Partner with the founder on strategy, priorities, and execution Set up internal systems, tools, and documentation from the ground up Coordinate with external legal, financial, and research partners Lead special projects across research, hiring, and compliance Support fundraising, reporting, and funder communications Research and test new tools or approaches to increase efficiency Keep the company’s momentum strong, focused, and aligned What You Bring A natural instinct for clarity, structure, and systems High ownership and self-direction — you make things happen Excellent written and verbal communication Interest in science, design, or future-facing technologies Familiarity with operations, early-stage startups, or research environments is a plus.
