Job Title: SEN Specialist Qualified Teacher Location: Dunstable, UK
Are you a passionate, experienced qualified teacher with a strong background in Functional Skills education? This is your chance to join an exceptional specialist school in Dunstable, working with young people aged 7 to 19 years who have Education, Health and Care Plans and whose learning needs mean they thrive in a specialist setting rather than mainstream.
About the School & the Children You Will Support The school is a well‑established special academy catering to young people with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and associated needs, aged 7‑19. They benefit from smaller class sizes, a curriculum designed to develop independence, personal and social skills alongside academic learning, and pathways into adult life that are meaningful and life‑enhancing.
You will be joining a warm, inclusive environment where pupils are supported to become confident, resilient and prepared for their futures. Behaviour and attitudes are positive and staff‑pupil relationships are strong.
Key Responsibilities of the SEN Specialist Qualified Teacher Role
Plan, deliver and assess high‑quality teaching and learning for students with special educational needs in line with their EHCPs and the school's curriculum.
Deliver Functional Skills in English and Maths across Key Stages 3-5, ensuring the content is accessible and engaging for a wide range of abilities.
Develop and adapt teaching materials, schemes of work and lessons to meet the individual needs and strengths of pupils aged 7‑19.
Lead one or more classes or groups, ensuring that learners make excellent progress academically, socially and personally.
Collaborate closely with teaching assistants, specialists (therapists, behaviour leads), SENCO and other professionals to ensure a coherent approach to each pupil's support.
Monitor, track and report on student progress, adapting interventions and providing feedback to pupils, parents/carers and other stakeholders.
Promote independence, resilience and life-skills development (including communication, self‑management, and social skills).
Maintain consistently high expectations of behaviour, safeguarding, inclusion and wellbeing for all pupils.
Contribute to the wider life of the school: extra‑curricular activities, events, visits, and the "preparation for adulthood" agenda.
Qualifications, Skills & Attributes Required
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and eligibility to teach in the UK.
Proven experience working with children or young people with SEND (particularly MLD and/or cognition & learning needs).
Strong experience teaching Functional Skills in English and Maths, ideally within a SEND or alternative provision setting.
A deep understanding of differentiated and inclusive pedagogies, and how to adapt curriculum content for learners with diverse special educational needs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and team‑working skills.
Ability to plan and deliver engaging, purposeful lessons that promote progress and build independence.
Calm, patient, resilient and flexible, with a positive attitude and a sense of humour.
Strong commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, equality and the welfare of children.
Ability to build meaningful relationships with pupils, staff, families and external partners.
Knowledge of current SEND legislation, EHCPs, and behaviour for learning approaches is highly desirable.
Benefits of Working Through SENDHelp
Competitive pay and PAYE payments with no hidden umbrella fees.
A dedicated consultant who supports you at every stage of your placement.
Complimentary trial days where possible - so you can experience the school and role before committing.
Access to ongoing CPD and over 400 free training courses designed specifically for those working in SEND environments.
Professional growth and a clear pathway into longer-term roles or permanent contracts.
Flexible placement options to suit your lifestyle and long-term goals.
A well-connected, specialist agency with strong relationships across SEN and SEMH schools in the region.
A genuine opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young people with SEND and help them build brighter futures.
If you're ready to take the next step in your career as a SEN specialist qualified teacher in Dunstable, and you bring experience in Functional Skills alongside a commitment to inclusive education - we'd love to hear from you.
