Please note that this job is open only to current members of staff of Cardiff University who are eligible for redeployment.Internal Redeployment Only - Research Assistant in domestic thermal demand modelling (Cardiff School of Engineering)Cardiff School of EngineeringThe Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS), one of the research groups within Cardiff School of Engineering, is looking to recruit a Research Assistant for an exciting research project on the modelling of domestic thermal demand with an emphasis on cooling.The successful candidate will undertake research duties to support the work programme of the Impact Delivery project ‘Tool for quantifying the long-term thermal imbalance of ground-source heat pumps’, including creating datasets for cooling demand profiles at individual dwelling and community levels, devising methods for forecasting cooling demand, and using specialist software to simulate community level cooling demand. The Research Assistant will support the integration of cooling demand data with numerical models of ground-source heat pump-based energy systems. Essential CriteriaQualifications and EducationA degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience.Knowledge, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge of research methods and techniques within specialist field including:Techniques to model domestic cooling demand.Proficient use of IES VE to model and simulate building energy systems.Use of machine learning techniques to forecast cooling demand. Proven ability to analyse complex information, including large datasets, and summarise appropriately.Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies.Knowledge and understanding of low-carbon technologies in energy systems.Communication and Team WorkingProven communication skills, including presentation to various audiences.Excellent organisational and team-working skills.OtherProven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work.Desirable CriteriaPostgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in modelling of cooling demand and buildings or relevant industrial experienceEvidence of collaborations with industry.Proven ability to work without close supervision.Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community.Proven understanding of UK policy towards decarbonisation of heat (including cooling).
